Sinkhole Facts and Interesting Information
At Wells Law firm we want you to know as much as possible about sinkholes. When the value of your home is at stake you need to learn everything you can about what is going on with your property. Learning sinkhole facts can give you an upper hand when dealing with reluctant insurers who may try to convince you that what you have is NOT a sinkhole.
Here are a few sinkhole facts:
- Many of the lakes in Florida are sinkhole relics
- Sinkholes can threaten water supplies by draining unfiltered water from lakes, streams and wetlands directly into the aquifer below
- Sinkholes form when rainwater seeps through the soil, reacting with decaying matter and becoming acidic. The slightly acidic water erodes the limestone, creating cavities and voids. The land then collapses into the cavities.
- Warning signs of sinkholes include gradual localized ground settlement, doors and windows failing to close properly, cracks in a foundation, a circular pattern of ground cracks outlining the sinking area and turbidity in local well water
- The best way of fixing sinkhole damage is by grouting AND underpinning
- Sinkhole damage is not required to be covered by insurance in Pasco and Hernando counties in many cases
- Most sinkholes do not develop quickly
